Life Isn’t Fair. Ne Résistez Pas.
I read something the other day in The Chimp Paradox by Steve Peters.
And honestly—it stopped me in my tracks.
“Life isn’t fair.”
That’s it. That’s the line.
No build-up. No explanation. Just… there you go.
And I don’t fully know why, but it landed hard.
Because I was brought up to do things right.
Be good.
Follow the rules.
Play fair.
Do your best.
And I did.
And somewhere along the way, I must have picked up this quiet belief:
If you do all that… things should work out.
So when they didn’t?
I’d hear it straight out of my own mouth—
“That’s not fair.”
And I meant it.
But here’s the thing no one really sat me down and said:
“You’re right. It’s not fair.
But that’s life. Now get on with it.”
No one said it like that.
So instead, I pushed.
I tried to make things fair.
Tried to fix it.
Tried to force outcomes that just weren’t moving.
I argued with reality like it had made a mistake.
And it hadn’t.
Reading that line—life isn’t fair—in black and white…
It just cut through all of that.
No debate. No negotiation.
Just truth.
And here’s what’s starting to click for me:
It’s not even the situation that wears you out—
it’s the resistance to it.
That constant, low-level
“this shouldn’t be happening”
loop in your head.
That’s what drains you.
Ne résistez pas.
Don’t resist.
Not in a “give up” way—
that’s not what I’m saying.
I just mean stop fighting what’s already here
like it’s going to suddenly change its mind.
There’s something very steadying about just saying:
Right. This isn’t fair.
And leaving it there.
No spiral.
No story.
No trying to twist it into something else.
Just—this is what it is.
And from there… you’ve got space.
To think.
To breathe.
To decide what you’re going to do next.
I can see now how much energy I’ve spent trying to make life behave the way I thought it should.
That’s a tough one to admit.
But it’s also a relief.
So if you’re in one of those moments right now—
where it’s not going your way,
where it feels unfair—
just notice…
Are you fighting it?
And what happens if, just for a moment…
you don’t?
Ne résistez pas.
